Population:
Switzerland has a population of 7.8 million as of 2010. More than 75% of the population lives in the central plain, which stretches between the Alps and the Jura Mountains and from Geneva in the southwest to the Rhine River and Lake Constance in the northeast. Resident foreigners and temporary foreign workers make up about 20% of the population. The year 2010 was marked by an increase in the number of births, marriages and divorces. The number of deaths remained practically stable. Only the number of registered partnerships fell by 17% compared with 2009. These are the provisional findings of the statistics of natural population change for 2010 from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
